An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is now mandatory to enter the United Kingdom for travellers from 54 countries. This requirement, effective from 8th January 2025, aims to enhance border security and streamline entry processes. The requirement will also extend to travellers from European countries from 2 April 2025, with applications for these travellers open from 5 March.
Key Details of the ETA System:
- Application Process: Travellers can apply for an ETA online or via the UK ETA app. The application involves providing passport details, contact information, biometric data, and answering security questions. The process typically takes about 20 minutes, with decisions made within three working days.
- Cost and Validity: The ETA costs £10 and is valid for two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first. It permits multiple entries into the UK during its validity period.
- Purpose and Duration of Stay: The authorisation allows stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, short-term study, and permitted paid engagements. However, it does not permit longer stays, paid work, access to public funds, or successive visits intended to establish residency.
- Exemptions: British and Irish citizens, as well as individuals with existing UK immigration status, are exempt from this requirement. Resident citizens of Ireland travelling from Ireland or other specified territories do not need an ETA.
While the ETA grants permission to travel to the UK, it does not guarantee entry. Travellers will still be subject to border control checks upon arrival.
The UK government emphasises that this new system is designed to digitise the border, enhance security, and improve the travel experience for visitors. Travellers are advised to apply for their ETA well in advance of their planned travel dates to ensure a smooth entry process.
