Environmental Cost Surcharge Introduced by Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa Group has introduced a new environmental cost surcharge intended to cover part of the increasing costs resulting from environmental regulations, such as the legal 2% blending obligation for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) which is required for flights departing from EU countries from 1 January 2025.

The cost is effective from 26 June 2024 for travel from 1 January 2025. The surcharge applies to all flights offered and operated by the Lufthansa Group from the 27 EU countries and the UK, Norway and Switzerland, by Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Eurowings (excluding eurowings.com), Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Edelweiss. Fares will go up between €1 – €72, depending on the type of ticket. Below is a summary of surcharges per segment, depending on flight distance and travel class:

Short to medium haul flights:

Economy Class: from €1 to €5

Business Class: from €1.50 to €7

Long haul flights: 

Economy Class: from €6 to €12

Premium Economy Class: from €9 to €18

Business Class: from €18 to €36

First Class: from €36 to €72
