An increasing number of rail stations are accepting e-Tickets for their passengers in a continued move to improve efficiency and reduce printing across the industry. Towards the end of last year, stations managed by Govia Thameslink Railway installed 710 barcode readers at its ticket gates, resulting in 98 stations introducing the digital service including Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink train services.
E-Tickets offer a host of benefits, such as reduced costs and increased sustainability due to lack of printing, time savings thanks to the avoidance of having to collect physical tickets, and peace of mind – there is less likelihood of losing a digital ticket.
According to Rail Advent, the proportion of passengers buying e-Tickets nationally has more than doubled, with an increase from 20% to 49% during the last four years, while the percentage of customers purchasing traditional paper tickets has more than halved.
